Giclée
Printing 101
| "A giclée is the
closest thing a collector can have to an original...
" |
- From
an article appearing in Digital Fine Art Magazine,
"Why Artists Like Giclèes" by Jane Karlicek
|
Pronounced "zhee-clay", (La)
Giclée, the feminine noun version
of the French verb Gicler, means "that
which is sprayed or squirted." The process is
named such because
the method, first developed in 1989, involves squirting
microscopic
dots of ink onto fine
quality art paper and is considered one of the most significant
breakthroughs in digital imaging today.
This new method of creating limited
edition prints begins with a scanned copy transparency
or direct digital scan of the original work. After preparing
the digital file to match as closely to the original
as possible, a proof print is provided that
the customer approves
before
the
image
is output on papers created specifically for the Epson
printers. We offer canvas, watercolor or fine art smooth.
Additionally the prints
can be hand embellished with a brush stroke texture
which helps to lend the look and feel of
an original to a quality reproduction while offering valuable
UV protection. For pricing and further informationon on

Finishing Touch service, please call.
Based on accelerated aging
tests, manufacturers claim Giclée prints have a
life span of 80 to 100 years before any visible fading.
The manufacturers
fail to
mention
however,
that this is under opimum storage conditions and that these
tests should not be compared against real life conditions.
Printing:
Single prints and Reprints
Paper up to
44" wide is offered. Choose from either: Epson UltraSmooth
Fine Art: 100% cotton rag,
acid free or Watercolor Paper: Somerset
Velvet /100% cotton, acid free or Arches Cold
Press /pH Neutral/225gr OR Ilford or Canon's Canvas: 19
mil acid free 100% cotton.
Our Epson
9800 benefits from Epson's UltraChrome K3 ink technology.
Quality output and longevity are the result of incorporating
high density pigments that produce prints with an expanded
color gamut that is further enhanced by Epson's unique
three level black ink technology.
Reprints
cost the second print price because the calibration of
the
file is done with the original order. Reprinting does
not mean that the results can be duplicated as accurately
to the initial order, even though print files are archived.
There are
several reasons for this:
If orders
change with the paper selection then our staff may need
to recalibrate the file. Should you need to see a proof
print again then the first print price will be charged.
Other problems
in image reprinting are inherent in the industry's introduction
of new inks, papers and printers. We are archiving your
approved proof prints to prepare for this eventuality.
You can always bring back your proof print if you have
one or your original back for possible recalibration.
The changes necessary are the customer's responsibility.
Scanning:
Digitizing your original
We can scan
from film or original UNFRAMED art. The very best scan
would be direct from your originals. Utilizing your personal
scans requires a proof print for matching . Set up files
in RGB, TIF preferably @300 ppi at final output size.
Our studio scans offer you a variety
of file sizes. We can scan at output size and/or other
additional sizes from approximately 66 to 264 MB. Final
result can be in RGB or CMYK.
Proofing: Matching your original
We have a staff of experienced technicians
that excel in color printing and computer technology. We
try to match any proof print or original. Just as artists
find the impossibility of duplicating certain colors or
effects they have created, so does the technical processes.
Differences inherent in ink dyes, pigments and paper selected
sometimes prevent exact duplication of the original.
Our one hour maximum testing consists
of color correcting the digital file. The test proof print
will be of the full image at a reduced size. We will print
an 8x10 or 12x18 depending on the final output size. The
testing is included in the print price.
After the initial testing, additional
color correction time will be billed at $100.00/hr. All
tests will be available per your request. The
8x10 format costs$15.00 each or a 12x18 or strip format
at output
size is $20.00. For orders using different paper
emulsions for the same image, separate testing is necessary.
Should CANCELLATION of an order be
desired the testing time of $50.60 will be charged.
Handling: Optimizing life-span
Handle with care. Your prints require
handling befiting any fine art piece. Caution: Inks may
smear or smudge. Keep away from water.
We suggest that your giclee prints
be framed under glass or mounted. We spray canvas prints
for better UV protection since canvas prints are not protected
by glass.

Archiving:
Cd downloads and such
We automatically archive any giclee
file. We will also download your file to a CD for you with
the initial order at no charge. There is a search fee
and a down-load fee for subsequent orders.
While we archive customer's files for
future giclee prints, we cannot guarantee that colors will
match in the future due to changes in technology relating
to the printers, inks, and papers. Customers will have
to pay a first print price at that time for prints. Please
ask if you have any questions.
